I love the Fourth of July. I love the theme apparel, the food, the spirit of the day. Saying eff you to people who want to bring you down. Lee Greenwood. Fireworks.
All of it. Love.
But I’m struggling to get into full-on unabashed patriotic celebration mode this year. So I need to say this: This stuff is not new. There have *always* been two Americas.
Let’s celebrate the one we strive to be, because the ideals are revolutionary and they were worth the fight. But let’s stop turning a blind eye to the one that lives in the gap between ideals and reality. Especially the ones at work. It’s time to learn our full history, own up to the ugly, and do the hard work to really become the America we want to be.
Freedom. Equality. The right to the pursuit of happiness. Liberty and justice for *all*.
They are great ideas. It’s fine to debate about the best way to get there (in fact, the forefathers wanted it that way), but we need to keep going until we do.
Let’s do this for real, America. See you out there.
